etiquette et bricolage

,

the girl was invited to a special tea party play-date recently.

it was hostessed by one of her favourite friends,
so she took her preparations very seriously
and even posed for a quick souvenir photoshoot.

we offered to entertain the tea party hostesses' brother at our place,
which tuned out to be a very good plan.
the young ladies would certainly have been distracted by the building of Hamster Haven.

toi et moi, malgre tous.

a couple of months ago, david was approached by a 'locations' guy,
asking if he would be interested in renting out his studio for taping a few scenes of
an upcoming Quebec prime-time romantic comedy.
why ever not!!?
day one of taping saw 40 men and women sporting earpiece communication devices swarm our backyard, filling the space with flight-cases, tables, lights, cameras and action!

the editing van was parked right outside of, and butted right up to, our front/side window.
 (with a metre between us, the techie and I politely ignored each other through the two panes of glass the entire evening.)

esther was up to the excitement, though. days before she had devised a plan that would keep her right in the soup of things;  the tried and true Lemonade Stand!
we have done a few lemonade based activities in the past,  so right after school she took to the kitchen, and with total confidence proceeded to direct the citrus squeezing.
I was in charge of simple syrup and ice.

she was unphased by the hustle, set up her station right outside of the studio entrance,
 served ice cold, fresh squeezed lemonade to any comer,
and got a good gander at the proceedings.
at one point I glanced out of the window to see her pink hoodied self loping in step behind a tall thin grey hoodied gaffer, like she'd rented the place.

she proved to be a very dedicated entrepreneur, and even placed a 'back in 10 minutes' sign on the
table when I called her in to dinner.

and although she made a few $$$,
 her real reward was jotted upon the corner of her shingle at the end of the evening.
 the whole gang comes back to tape another episode in November...
perhaps a hot cocoa shack next time.

good sport

edgar has been enjoying speech therapy at CHEO with his "big friend" sarah...

he is a gregarious little guy, and loves to joke around and share his ideas, but it has been tricky, even for me, to understand his point sometimes.

we went outside to play a few weeks ago, and settled on a game of baseball.
i grabbed the ball, and he reached for the bat, saying "here, mom, i got the wackit!"
he tends to 'elmer fudd' his R sound, therfore,
i thought he must be confusing the game with tennis, and gently corrected him:
~
"sweetheart, it's called a bat."
"no, it a wakit."
"honey it is a bat...a baseball bat...not a tennis racket."
to which he replied, "no, mom, it is a WAKIT!"
as he swung the thing in a powerful arc around his body...
~
it was clear to me then that he really meantwhack-it.

frosty blades

edgar has completed his first series of skating lessons.
lizzy ( and daddy too) coaxed him along for 1/2 hour each tuesday afternoon.
six weeks weeks later, he is well on his way to a brand new skill,
having earned a yellow participation ribbon for his efforts.
the look of pride on his face had me rummaging for my hankie.
~~~
another boy was testing his skates and skills that day as well;
a young veteran soldier.
he and edgar were on the bench at the same time...
edgar's little hockey skates,
 side by side
 a prosthetic 3/4 leg/skate system.
~
yellow ribbons.
gratitude.
pride.
hair today, hair yesterday
well, it had to happen sometime...esther's first haircut.
just a few trims since the day she was born, so here is a
a record of the last 24 hours of esther's hair...in spite of the sombre look in the final frame, the girl is really pleased with the cut.  her idea, in fact...
it is adorable.
 she was very brave at the salon.
so was i,
and yes, i saved a shaggy lock.
more documentation of the new style to follow, i'm sure,
i now have a new and computer-compatible camera!
beady-ize
for the past few weeks, edgar has been festooning himself as though for mardi gras, and david has been the photo-journalist. here is a random assortment of accessories and outfits.
i am thankful for the great grab-bags of costume jewels from the neighbourhood services, which allow us to keep our son in the style to which he has become accustomed.
introducing....
phones were ringing early in the morning of december the 1st, 2007...no answer at the studio in montreal, no answer at angela desveaux' cell number, and no answer at david's cell phone, either. it was 2:45 in the morning after all. who would even be calling?
me! labouring with the delivery of child number 2. david in montreal, in the midst of producing an album, me at our home in ottawa. at least the midwife answered her pager...
david had gotten "a feeling" to look at the phone at around 3:30 a.m., and then phones started ringing here in ottawa! he departed as soon as he could, and i really did try to wait...but our little boy was born at 6:15 a.m., with daddy still 1/2 hour away by car...i was so glad he arrived in one piece...it must have been a brutal trip, as they had wrapped up that days' studio session at 2:00 in the morning.
our lovely friend sarah slaughter had volunteered to pitch in if i needed some help, so she had been summoned from slumber around 4:00 in the morning, and was an amazing caregiver. she made the house seem cosy and welcoming, serving up tea to the midwives, answering the phonecalls from david, keeping an eye on me, and in the end, cutting the cord...
so, a 7lb, 14oz, wee boy that we have named edgar howard swain draves.
esther woke around 8:00 to find her new brother all cosy and ready for hugs and kisses.
elmo's influence?
creative arts
i never imagined the little suckling born a mere 17 months ago would turn into a fingerpainting godzilla, crushing mere mortals with a glance an a hiccough! and yet, here we are.
the plan was a cute one...get thomas and esther together to paint up some goods. sarah and i would then cleverly transform these artworks into precious chistmas cards for those family members who might fall for those things...(grannies?)
well, i think a carpet cleaner is in order, but the kids are clean and shiny again! and the christmas cards are the store-bought kind after all.
