dinky-rink

an afternoon at our teeny local rink.

the longer days scratch away at the ice
leaving us hoping for a few more great winter days to bambi across the freeze...

oatmeal cookies

the perfect oatmeal chocolate chip cookie.
we have been scrumptiousing our way through batch after batch of these things lately...the most "little helper" friendly cookie recipe i know...a playclay-like dough that is very forgiving.
1 c butter
1 c brown sugar
1 c all purpose flour
1 c wheat flour
2 c rolled oats
1 t baking soda
1 t baking powder
1 t vanilla
1/2 t salt
***
1/2 c hot water
***
1 c chocolate chips
(if you are crazy, substitute raisins for chocolate,
and add 1/2 t nutmeg and 1 t cinnamon)
~~
dump everything in a bowl, add the hot water, mush up with the hands and then squash in the chocolate chips.
~~
smush by tablespoons onto an ungreased baking tray
~~
bake at 375 for 10 minutes or so.
~~
the dough freezes well, so it is worthwhile to double-batch it
and store a bunch frozen in a pre-tablespooned state for an afternoon treat
or 2 or 3 or 4...

still winter

catwich?

this weekend, nana summoned her napanee fair face painting talents in order to decorate an eager wiggly esther as a witch with a thin layer of pussy-cat.

days later, the green is still glittering off in the bath...

no kidding.

"that is what artists do, mama; make a mess."

worms 'n' fairies

esther and i investigated our worm compost bin today.
she wanted a "family to live in this perfect hand-house". she furnished it with strips of newspaper and apple peel as room and board. and edgar was fodder for the dress-up box a few days ago...you can't see the wings from this angle, but he waggled them gleefully.
a lovely little winter nymph.
